The Hardest Part About Clearing Clutter

I’ve spent the last month challenging myself and others to clear out their cluttered homes and I know from experience: the hardest part about clearing clutter is the final step, getting the stuff off the property.

This day, my last of 27, will be devoted to removing the various piles, bags and boxes of stuff that I’ve decided can move on. I know that this bit will actually be the biggest challenge of all as it requires some strategic planning to find places for all of this stuff to go. I also know from experience that those bags and piles can stick around for a long time if we don’t know what to do with them. I am lucky to live where I do because our local dump has a well utilized salvage center that will take used items and allow others to come and get them. There are also Goodwill and Value Village stores close by, so I think I have it under control.

After doing this, here is what I’ve learned:

  1. Life is a moving target. Things change, so does our need for various items. Though something has outlived it’s usefulness in your house, someone else is in the phase of life that you once were and will be thankful for your gently used items.
  2. However, if it is junk, throw it out. Then think twice before purchasing any item. Ask yourself, “Is it useful, is it beautiful, is it necessary?” Repeat…
  3. 27 Days is a long time. On about day 7 I thought to myself “are you insane?!” I pushed through because I publicly said I would, and I am glad I did.
  4. If you start something and stick with it, your momentum and enthusiasm will inspire others to help you. I found support and encouragement along the way, both from friends and from my hubby, for that I am grateful.
  5. Stuff weighs you down. All our possessions just give us something to cling to. They make us believe we are worth something, have made it somewhere. Don’t believe it, you are worthy and valued even without the stuff. So are others who have less.
  6. Buy experiences, not stuff. You’ll tire of the stuff, but you’ll never tire of a lifetime of memories.
  7. Space is like money, the more you have the more you’ll use. Bigger is not better.
  8. Tread lightly when asking men to get rid of stuff. Some things are worth pushing for and some are just not. Pick your battles carefully.

On the 10th of February, the Chinese calendar will flip and we will begin the Year of the Snake. Traditionally, the time leading up to the new moon is a time to clear out all that is no longer needed, to begin the year afresh.

I think I’m ready!
