Today signaled the official phasing out of the penny from circulation in the Canadian monetary system. It wasn’t that it didn’t work anymore, but the little copper fellow was costing us more to produce than the 1/100th of a dollar that it represented. Your outdated kitchen may be just like that penny, unassumingly costing you.
You may not be forking out actual coin for your outdated kitchen, but it may be costing you both in resale value and in added stress.
Before: This kitchen functioned but definitely caused stress for the homeowner, my assistant Karen. It probably doesn’t come as a big surprise to you that kitchens are the most heavily utilized rooms in our homes. They are used for everything from cooking to homework, watching television to paying the bills. They are the social hubs of our home and family life. A poorly designed or unattractive kitchen is a creator of stress, most especially for women (men just don’t see stuff), and an attractive kitchen is one of the first things that buyers look for when shopping for a new home. This makes updating your kitchen one of the best investments for your house.
After: Added value and no more clutter!
When I built my house in 1994 (yes, I’ve been there that long) I told Steve I wanted a ‘kitchen with a house attached to it’. That’s what we built, and today my kitchen is just as functional as it was so many years ago. However, it is beginning to be in need of a bit of a facelift. I know I’m going to have to throw a little coin in its direction very soon. Very soon.
