February is heart and stroke month, a time to consider the health of one of your body’s most important organs. The heart pumps life giving blood, nutrients and oxygen through the rest of the body and obviously if it fails, we soon die. A healthy heart is vital to circulating chi within the overall system.
In Feng Shui the home is seen as a second body, a mystical body. This body also has a heart, and like the one in your physical body, it is at the center both physically and metaphorically. It too ideally allows for healthy distribution of vital chi throughout the home.
In the same way that our ancient ancestors gathered around a central fire, we still need a central place that allows us to come together and reconnect. Having a central gathering space in the home, where family and friends can congregate is ideal. Homes that do not offer this can create families that are fragmented and disconnected, being pushed and pulled in different directions. When stairwells or hallways dominate the center position we feel squeezed or may experience more acutely the inevitable ups and downs of life.
Imagine for a moment that the center of your house is the heart space. What do you find there? Is it open and inviting? Does it allow for circulation and access to the rest of the home, or is it narrow, constricted or utilitarian.
Does your home have a heart?
