Create Great Feng Shui with Plants

The addition of house plants to a space is one of my all time favorite overall chi boosters. They are an easy and approachable way to create great Feng Shui. While some Feng Shui adjustments seem out of the ordinary, culturally specific, or just plain weird to some, the lovely house plant is understandable to all.

If you think about it, the goal of Feng Shui is to live in spaces that closely mimic the rhythm and patterns of the natural order of the environment. When a space is designed using Feng Shui principles the idea is to provide comfort and safety on a deeply instinctive level. We are intimately connected to this lovely planet, and inviting nature into our interiors through the use of plants is an obvious way to enhance and to remind us of that connection.

Plants are living, vital beings and they bring their vitality to the indoor spaces in which they are placed. They also have the amazing capacity to clean and purify indoor air, which is often full of hidden pollutants.

It is shocking how many homes I walk into that are entirely house plant free zones. I always notice the stark contrast to my home, which has plants in nearly every room.

I utilize peace lilies, ferns, English ivy, pothos and dracena liberally throughout my home, as they are all on NASA’s list of great air purifying wonders. Plants help to soften hard edges, fill empty corners, brighten dull spots and bring life to display spaces. I couldn’t be without them. I have only one plant rule in my house – “Grow or Go!” If plants get nasty and straggly looking I thank them sincerely for their service and promptly compost them. Dying houseplants are not good Feng Shui!

I’m also gaga for orchids and have at least a few scattered about my abode at all times. They simply add beauty, and beauty is always a chi booster in my books!
