Today I had the pleasure of joining my friend Tracy Makarenko on her new internet radio program on the Voice America, 7th Wave station.
She is beginning her show with a series discussing the Chakra system and it’s role in the healing process. She began at the root chakra and will work her way up to the crown chakra, and her guests, like me, will round out her conversations about each of these energy centers.
She asked me to be her first guest, as the root chakra is all about creating a supportive foundation for the energy system, and that is exactly what Feng Shui does for your environment. When you align your internal energy with your external energy, amazing things can happen!
Support and stability is at the heart of Feng Shui. When our environments are designed with Feng Shui we create a stable platform from which to leap into our day to day lives. We also create a supportive landing pad to return home to. This is the job of the root chakra as well, to ground us into the earth’s energy, into her abundance, so that we feel safe enough to expand outward from there.
How do we use Feng Shui to create this kind of safe environment? I gave Tracy’s listeners 6 steps to get them started. In this 6 part series, I will cover them all. So let’s get started.
Step 1
Get the energy in the door!
The front door is considered in Feng Shui to be the ‘Mouth of Chi’. Picture your body as your first home, and your home as your second home. If we are not getting energy into the physical body, either through our actual mouth, or through the root chakra, we are not supplying vital nutrients to the system. So it is with the house. If no energy is able to come in, it will not be a vital place to reside.
Have a look at this entrance. Does it say to you “come on in, you are welcome here”? Nope, to me it says “back off, no entry”. This is the subtle message that an entry like this is giving off, and when we send out messages, the Universe answers us. So if you want to have a vital and energetic home pay attention to the message! Create a warm and welcoming entry as the first step to your Feng Shui plan.

This entry by contrast, is lovely. It has a solid door, lending a sense of security, but it is still warm and welcoming. The visitor is encouraged to go up the path and I love that the bright hydrangeas help to soften the dark door, keeping it from feeling imposing or unfriendly.
To create your own chi friendly entry;
- Make sure that bushes and trees are pruned regularly so as not to physically or visually block the door from the front street.
- A solid door is generally best as it offers the most security.
- Use a color on the door that both compliments the house, and your own intentions. The black door in this photo could be a great enhancement to career. (I’ll write more about this in a future post)
- Make it inviting. Use plantings, pathway lighting, and color to draw attention up to the door.
- Make sure it works and that it is easily opened to its fullest ability. Check your hinges and latches, and clean up those shoes that block the door swing.
- Open it regularly. Even if this is not the door that you normally use, make sure to open it daily and take a moment to invite in all that amazing chi that life has to offer!
Starting with a secure but inviting entry is Step 1 in supporting your root chakra through your environment.
Stay tuned for Step 2…
