Color has an effect on our chi.
It is well known that colors can create or enhance certain psychological states like depression, enthusiasm, joy or hunger. Color is powerful.
However, lots of people struggle when it comes to putting colors together. So what is the easiest way to build a color scheme?
Building a color scheme is easiest if you start with something that makes your heart sing. It is even easier if this item is patterned or has multiple colors in it. For example, a piece of art.
If you love an artwork it is very likely that you resonate with the colors that are in it, so it is a good starting point to build a scheme around.
You could also choose to start with a colorful rug, or even a toss cushion that you really like.
Simply take the colors in your chosen inspiration piece, decide which one will be primary and which ones will play a more minor part in your room.
The room above is built around the contemporary rug. The colors in the rug, orange, beige, aqua and brown, are the building blocks for the entire room.
I usually suggest that clients choose neutrals for items that are very expensive or will not be easily replaced. Things like sofas, built in cabinetry or floors should be in neutral colors. More inexpensive items, like toss cushions and accessories, even paint, can be more bold and trendy. Taking this approach allows you to change your color scheme easily, or seasonally if you are the type who becomes bored often.
If you wanted to be a little more bold the chair covers could also be a more dramatic color and they would not cost a fortune to recover down the line.
Or you could simply use a chair that was a color from your chosen scheme.
It is certainly not impossible to create a color palette from one color but for those who find it challenging, this is a simple method for creating a cohesive design.
What do your color choices do for you? If they don’t uplift you, calm you, or generally make you happy. It might be time for a change.
